ANTIAIRCRAFT COMMAND - Preserving the History of U.S. Army Anti-aircraft Artillery of World War II

894th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion

After serving in Africa with II Corps as the Second Battalion, 67th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment, the organization went into action near Naples, Italy in October 1943.  The battalion was reorganized as the 894th AAA Automatic Weapons Battalion in early 1944.  Following their activities with Fifth Army in Italy, the 894th landed in Southern France in September 1944.

This history, in Army report format, was written by Captain Charles I. Olson, the battalion historian.  It is dated 23 January 1945.  The report lists five battle star credits.  Eventually, the unit's record would reflect seven campaign stars: Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.

This unit history has been provided by TSgt Jimmy W. Butts, USAF (retired), in memory of his father, T/5 Charlie Wade Butts of Goodlett, Texas. The elder Mr. Butts was transferred to the 894th AAA after serving with the 439th AAA Battalion.  Sergeant Butts recreated the document presented here from the copy preserved at the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland.
