ANTIAIRCRAFT COMMAND - Preserving the History of U.S. Army Anti-aircraft Artillery of World War II

601st Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion (Semimobile)

The following is a narrative history of the 601st AAA Gun Battalion recreated in PDF format. This history is identified as the work of T/5 Gordon R. Kerr and appears to have been written in 1945, with final touches applied in early 1946. Approaching the battalion history from the perspective of Headquarters Battery, it is a very readable account of the organization's travels and accomplishments.

The 601st was the first American AAA gun battalion to fire on German V-1 buzz bombs in defense of England.  The unit would use their expertise in this area again as part of the Antwerp X air defense of that Belgian city's important port facilities.

This document has been kindly provided by R.H. Holder of Lubbock, Texas in honor of the men of Battery D, 601st AAA Gun Battalion.

(Note: A name and address is given at the end of the document where members of the battalion could write to receive a copy of the narrative as they returned to life in the States. This information is included for historical interest only.  Of course, readers should not expect a response from this address today and are asked to respect the privacy of the current residents - if any.)
