ANTIAIRCRAFT COMMAND - Preserving the History of U.S. Army Anti-aircraft Artillery of World War II

440th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion (Mobile)

The following is a PDF reproduction of Mud, Dust and Five Stars, the unit history published by the 440th AAA AW Bn at Düsseldorf, Germany in 1945.  The project is the work of 1st Lt. George C. Meyer, who is credited as author and editor.  The volume features several drawings by WOJG Gilbert Underwood II.  Cpl. Gordon Auxier of C Battery contributed an original poem chronicling the battalion's experiences during the Battle of the Bulge.

The history features a map of the battalion's travels in Europe.  A unit roster is included that separates enlisted men by battery or detachment.  Battalion officers are listed on a separate roster with no indication of individual assignments.  The rosters provide 1945 mailing addresses for all personnel.  (Please respect the privacy of the current occupants and do not contact these addresses seeking information on unit veterans.  The addresses are included here for historical purposes only.)

The "five stars" of 440th AAA were credited for participation in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. The unit made significant contributions during its time in Europe, most notably during the Battle of the Bulge and in the Colmar Pocket operation.
