ANTIAIRCRAFT COMMAND - Preserving the History of U.S. Army Anti-aircraft Artillery of World War II

227th Antiaircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion

The following is a PDF reproduction of the unit history published by the 227th AAA Searchlight Bn in October 1945 and printed in Rhode Island.  This small volume measures eight by five inches and sports a hand-drawn paper cover.  The publication has no bookbinding spine and is merely held together by three standard staples along the left edge.  There are no photographs, although a unit roster is included.  The unit's activities are briefly summarized in a "Battalion Log" section.  A short narrative expands on this summary in the form a "Letter to Joe."

The battalion's overseas journey took the unit first to Australia, then on to New Guinea and the Philippine Islands.  This unit was the first to provide "artificial moonlight" in the Pacific Theater, a technique that had become commonplace in Europe.  The battalion was awarded the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for their outstanding efforts.
